Use a fluid extractor or turkey baster to remove the old power guiding fluid from the replace. Top it off with newly fluid, start the vehicle and turn the turn from lock at lock a few times. Check hoses and fittings for signs of swelling. Check lines and fittings for wet spots and damage. Check the reservoir for cracks and leaks. Check the steering pump for cracks and leaks. Look behind the steering pump pulley for a wet area. Look at the bellows, at the ends of the rack and pinion assembly, for wet spots.
Let the engine cool. Once the engine is cool, remove the return hose from the reservoir and drain all of the fluid into a drain pan. Turn the steering wheel 10 times lock to lock to help purge the fluid from the steering box. Once the fluid has stopped draining, reinstall the hose. Always have used ATF in all my old Cadillacs besides for the 94 Fleetwood which specifically said to only use PS fluid. Any old 50's-70's Cadillacs I believe ATF is what GM used for many years. PS fluid and ATF are both hydraulic fluid but ATF with its extra detergents, I would assume would help keep the internals of PS components very clean
